Welcome to Unravel Spanish

A place to learn Spanish, explore Spain and enjoy the journey.

Perhaps you’re planning a trip to Spain. Perhaps you already spend time there and would love to communicate more confidently. Or perhaps you’re simply fascinated by the language, culture and people.

Whatever brings you here, welcome.

Unravel Spanish is designed for curious adult learners who want to go beyond memorising words and grammar rules to develop a deeper understanding of Spanish and the world in which it is spoken.

You can learn at your own pace, follow topics that interest you and return to familiar language whenever you need to.

1. Find your starting point

You don’t need to begin at the very beginning if you already know some Spanish.

Our learning resources are organised into five broad levels.

Beginner — A0

You’re completely new to Spanish or want to start again from the beginning.

Elementary — A1

You know some basic words and expressions and can manage simple conversations.

Lower Intermediate — A2

You can communicate in familiar situations but want to understand and express more.

Intermediate — B1

You can hold conversations on everyday topics and want to become more fluent, flexible and confident.

Upper Intermediate — B2

You want to understand more natural Spanish, express opinions and discuss a wider range of subjects.

Choose the level that feels comfortable. It’s perfectly fine to explore material from different levels.

2. Start with a conversation

Everyday conversations are at the heart of our learning approach.

Choose a conversation about something that interests you.

It might be a conversation between neighbours, a visit to a bookshop, a discussion about travel plans or an encounter in a local café.

Read or listen to the conversation and try to understand what is happening.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word.

The aim is to begin with meaning and gradually discover the language that makes the conversation work.

3. Unravel the language

Each conversation is accompanied by learning activities based on our seven-step UNRAVEL method.

You’ll move from understanding the conversation to noticing useful expressions, remembering vocabulary, making connections and practising the language yourself.

Along the way, you’ll find links to our Vocabulary Threads and Grammar Threads, where you can explore particular language features in greater depth.

You can follow the complete lesson or concentrate on the areas where you need more practice.

4. Follow a thread

One of the most enjoyable aspects of learning a language is discovering how everything connects.

A conversation about buying a book might lead you to expressions for giving opinions, talking about stories, discussing preferences or making recommendations.

A conversation set in a Spanish town might lead you to discover its history, traditions or local customs.

These connections are what we call threads.

Follow the ones that interest you. Every thread adds something to your understanding.

5. Bring Spanish into your life

Language becomes more useful when it becomes part of your everyday experience.

Try describing something you’ve done, talking about your plans, reading a little Spanish each day or using a new expression in a conversation.

Even a few minutes of regular contact with Spanish can make a difference over time.

The goal isn’t simply to complete lessons. It’s to develop the confidence and ability to use Spanish in situations that matter to you.
